Tie dye instructions

Caution: Although the dyes included in this kit are considered non-toxic, it is recommended to use gloves and masks at all times whilst handling dyes. It is not recommended to breathe in powdered dyes. If dye enters eyes or mouth please flush with clean cool water and seek medical attention. Store out of reach and sight of children.

Before opening dyes please ensure surfaces are covered as dyes may stain everything they come into contact with.

For best results & longevity use on 100% cotton or other natural fibres (white and lighter colours will achieve the best results) and wash dyed items on cool with similar colours. To achieve more of a pastel result reduce the waiting time and/or use less dye powder if preparing liquid dye.

Powder dye will last months if stored sealed in a cool dry place. Liquid dye should be used immediately for best results but can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.

When items are complete please wash in future with similar colours. For longevity wash following individual garment care instructions, preferably at low temperatures (but some occasional 60 degree washes and tumble dries shouldn't impact the vibrancy of your dye!)

Dye methods

Liquid dye

  • Dampen items with warm water & soda ash

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of dye with 250ml warm water

  • Slowly apply dye to tied garment as desired

  • Cover with cling film or similar and allow to sit for 24+ hours before rinsing

  • Rinse in cool running water for 1-2 minutes, then rinse or soak in warm water until clear (or close to). Wash alone in a washing machine with detergent.

Ice Dye

  • Place the item in a container (old fruit punnets work brilliantly!)

  • Layer with ice cubes generously on top, then sprinkle lightly with soda ash followed by powdered dye as desired.

  • Wait. Let it sit for 24+ hours after the last ice cube has melted before rinsing.

  • Rinse in cool running water for 1-2 minutes, then rinse or soak in warm water until clear (or close to). Wash alone in a washing machine with detergent.

Foam Dye

  • Layer shaving foam in a container. Follow the instructions for liquid dye & drip the dye onto the foam, then use a skewer to marble.

  • Dip your item into the foam to allow it to adhere. Loosely cover for 24+ hours before rinsing.

  • Works well for hats & shoes.

  • Rinse in cool running water for 1-2 minutes, then rinse or soak in warm water until clear (or close to). Wash alone in a washing machine with detergent.

Tying instructions

Spiral - place item flat on a surface, pinch the fabric in the centre and twist. Secure with bands.

Crumple - scrunch the fabric chaotically with your hands and loosely secure with bands.

Geode - pinch an area and tightly secure bands at regular intervals to create a roll shape.
